Yaqui Animal Rescue was founded in Sullivan City, TX by Sonia Venecia. The name 'Yaqui' was chosen for the ancestors of Sonia's incredible grandmother, the indigenous Yaqui Indians from Sonora, Mexico.
As a young child, Sonia spent many weekends and summers at what is now known as Yaqui Animal Rescue. The ranch was previously owned by her grandparents and was eventually sold off as the years passed.
About twenty years ago, Sonia started doing what she could for stray animals in South Texas. This included providing vet care, food, and finding forever homes for homeless cats and dogs. Over the years, the need grew to be greater and greater.
In 2004, when the ranch became available again, Sonia purchased the property back with the sole purpose of becoming a rescue for unwanted animals in the area.
In 2013, Yaqui Animal Rescue became a registered 501(c)(3) no-kill, non-profit rescue. Sonia and our rescue team have been rescuing animals ever since, and with a little help, have saved thousands of stray animals.
We are determined to help animals that have found themselves lost, abandoned, neglected or mistreated, and through no fault of their own, have also been unable to find a family and a loving home. With your unwavering support, we can continue to save more animals and make a difference in our community.
