Krissy is a miracle! Krissy gave birth to six beautiful puppies and then experienced severe bleeding. Her bloodwork left us with more questions than answers. Krissy tested positive for heartworm but negative for ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and Lyme disease. Her platelet count was zero and she was anemic, yet still active and breastfeeding her puppies. She was hospitalized and received a blood and platelet transfusion.
Three days after entering the emergency clinic, she as released. At that time, her platelet count had increased from 0 to 22. Today, her platelet level has risen to 84! It seems that the blood and platelet transfusions were incredibly beneficial. Moreover, she had very little bleeding. Our four veterinarians are still in disbelief that she not only survived but was breastfeeding while in a critical condition. We’re still uncertain about how she managed to survive, but we can only speculate that it was her strength and love as a new mother that made the difference.
