Canela is an approximately 3-year-old Kelpie/Shepherd mix weighing 30 lbs. She is spayed, heartworm positive, and currently undergoing slow-kill treatment.
Her story starts like many in South Texas—on the streets, surviving with limited human interaction, relying only on the kindness of those who fed her. What makes Canela different is what happened next. After a difficult spay surgery that she nearly didn’t survive, sending her back to that life was no longer an option. She was given a chance—and she’s been rising to meet it ever since.
After a few months in foster care, Canela is learning what safety, routine, and trust truly feel like. She is potty trained, crate trained, and walks well on a leash. She already knows basic commands like sit and lay down, and each day you can see her confidence growing.
She has a naturally calm, low-energy personality. She enjoys her walks, but she’s just as happy lounging nearby, quietly taking in her surroundings. She’s not demanding or high-maintenance—she’s observant, thoughtful, and bonds deeply once she feels secure.
Canela does well with other dogs when introductions are done slowly and respectfully. She has not been tested with cats, but her gentle demeanor suggests she may do well. Because she can be shy at first, any children in the home should be calm and taught to respect her space as she adjusts.
Here’s the reality: Canela is not an instant, outgoing dog. She will not immediately run into your arms. But if you give her time, patience, and consistency, she will meet you with something far more meaningful—trust that is earned, and a loyalty that runs deep.
She’s already done the hard part—surviving, healing, and learning to trust again. Now she just needs the right home to continue that progress. In the right hands, Canela isn’t just a good dog—she’s going to be an incredible one.
